Detailed information

Product detailed description

Astral Indus: High buoyancy and safety for extreme whitewater

Astral Indus: The Next Generation for Big Water

The Astral Indus represents a breakthrough in the personal flotation device (PFD) category. It is the world’s first freestyle-inspired PFD with extra-high buoyancy. The design takes into account the most demanding requirements of elite paddlers who need to stay afloat while swimming through treacherous, aerated waves. When you first put it on, the vest feels sturdy, but thanks to its clever cut, it immediately and naturally adapts to your body while paddling, so it doesn’t restrict your movement at all—even during dynamic strokes.

FoamTectonics™ and Flotection™ Protection

The Astral Indus vest’s exceptional ergonomics and mechanical durability are based on unique technological solutions:

  • FoamTectonics™: A patented two-panel system. The outer front panel is movable and follows the movements of your torso, while the inner panel remains firmly secured to your body. This prevents the vest from riding up and ensures a perfect fit.
  • High-Profile Buoyancy Design: Reinforced floats made of eco-friendly Gaia® foam (PVC-free) along the entire hull provide a third more buoyancy than is typical for conventional high-end models.
  • Flotection™: Built-in protective reinforcements on the back reliably absorb impacts and protect your spine and ribs when swimming in shallow or rocky waterways.
  • Indestructible packaging: The 500D Cordura® outer material, with nylon straps and stainless steel components, guarantees exceptional durability even during daily expedition use.

Professional Safety and Rescue Equipment

The Indus vest is designed as a full-fledged rescue harness that you wear at all times:

  • Quick-release rescue harness: A fully integrated chest rescue harness with a quick-release buckle for secure belaying and swiftwater rescue techniques.
  • Spectra® extraction loop: Reinforced loops and shoulder straps designed to withstand maximum loads, allowing the rider to be safely pulled out of the water or from a cliff.
  • Well-designed storage space: A cleverly hidden pocket behind the front panel provides instant access to the throw line. The side pockets offer space for a “web tow tether,” while the main pocket, with a reliable self-locking YKK® Vislon zipper, can hold carabiners, prusik loops, or a GPS. There’s also a sturdy attachment loop (lash tab) for a knife or a rescue light.

What is this vest ideal for?

Thanks to its high buoyancy and full rescue certification, the Astral Indus is the top choice for:

  • High water and extreme rapids: Extra buoyancy is invaluable in massive waves and highly choppy water, where standard vests fail.
  • Swiftwater rescue: Pockets for gear, high-load-capacity shoulder straps, and a certified chest harness make it the ultimate tool for rescue workers.
  • Expedition kayaking: Durable materials that can withstand the rigors of canyoning, combined with a system that adapts to the body's shape.

Expert advice: Due to the greater volume of buoyancy foam (especially on the front panel), pay close attention to proper vest adjustment when using the Indus model. Always put it on with the side straps fully loosened. Tighten it systematically from the bottom up—first tighten the bottom straps snugly across your ribs and abdomen so that the vest cannot ride up toward your chin while swimming. Only then should you fine-tune the side straps and, finally, the shoulder straps. If you’re using a chest strap in combination with a cowtail, make sure the strap guide and release buckle aren’t clogged with sand, and always position the carabiner so that it doesn’t get accidentally snagged while swimming.
