RTM Paname: A Specialized Racing Kayak Cross Model and an Extremely Fast River Runner
Paname: Born for Kayak Cross and Pure Fun
With the growing popularity of Kayak Cross (formerly Extreme Slalom), there was a need for boats that combine the agility of a slalom kayak with the durability of a plastic kayak. The French company RTM joined forces with elite paddlers to create the Paname model. Soon after its launch, however, it became clear that the characteristics that make it a winner on the race course—namely, its ability to accelerate instantly, hold a line, and turn on a dime — also make it one of the most fun and agile kayaks for recreational “river running.” This boat is perfect not only for racers but also for recreational paddlers looking to add an aggressive half-slice to their collection.
Hull and Hydrodynamics: Speed and Lightning-Fast Turns
The fuselage design was optimized for maximum aerodynamic efficiency:
- Speed as a Priority: The hull is designed to minimize water resistance. The boat glides beautifully and accelerates fantastically from a standstill, which is essential for launches from a sliding ramp and for breaking through waves.
- Planing hull and edges: The bottom allows for sharp edging. As soon as you edge the kayak, it immediately cuts into the eddy with the precision of a surgical scalpel.
- Slicey stern: The flattened tail with minimal displacement is the Paname’s secret weapon. By pushing the stern underwater, you can perform a pivot turn in a fraction of a second without losing speed, and at the boundary between currents, you’ll enjoy some spectacular “tailees” (squirts).
Two sizes: Paname and Paname S for perfect contact
In slalom and fast river running, it’s absolutely crucial that you’re neither too heavy nor too light for the boat. That’s why RTM manufactures this model in two optimized versions:
- Paname (Standard): With a volume of 239 liters, it is designed for paddlers in the weight range 70 to 85 kg.
- Paname S (Small): A narrower version (60 cm) with a smaller capacity of 207 liters, designed specifically for women, juniors, and lighter riders weighing 55 to 70 kg, which will make it easier for the boat to heel and for the stern to submerge.
Outfitting: Simplicity, Lightness, and Environmental Impact
While other creek kayaks compete with massive interior systems, Paname focuses on lightness (the kayak’s total weight is just 18 kg) and functionality. You’ll find everything you need for a perfect fit: adjustable footrests (bulkhead), a sliding seat base, adjustable thigh rests, and foam pillars.
A great bonus is the emphasis on sustainability—the PE seat and mirror (footrests) themselves are made of 100% recycled polyethylene from Rotomod's own production.
Appropriate Activities and Use in Whitewater
RTM Paname is a highly addictive tool for:
- Kayak Cross / Extreme Slalom Competition: A machine built to reach the top of the podium.
- River Running (WW II–IV): A typical run on this boat turns into an active search for eddies and surfing every wave.
- Intensive technique training: Thanks to its sharp response, this boat will teach you to develop a perfect feel for the water and how to work the edge.
About the RTM Brand
The French company RTM (Rotomod) boasts decades of experience in the design and manufacture of polyethylene kayaks and canoes. Close collaboration with the French national team ensures that RTM boats fully meet the demands of the world’s top athletes. The models in the Paname family are clear proof that RTM can produce not only excellent touring boats but also top-of-the-line racing models.
Caring for a Polyethylene Shell
The kayak is made of super-linear high-density polyethylene. To maximize its lifespan, we recommend storing it away from prolonged direct sunlight and UV rays. After paddling in dirty or sandy water, rinse the sliding parts of the backrests with fresh water to extend the life of the adjustment mechanisms.

Bonus program and purchase benefits
When you purchase this racing and recreational gem from us, you’ll receive a generous amount of credits for our bonus program. You can use these credits for a significant discount on a slalom paddle, a perfectly sealed spraydeck for whitewater, or a safe life jacket with a chest strap. We’re also happy to advise our customers on fine-tuning their gear to achieve a perfect connection with their boat.
Expert advice: If you’re switching from a classic “rounded” creek kayak to the Paname, you’ll find that this boat won’t forgive a passive sitting position. The Paname demands an active seating position and momentum! Its flat stern immediately cuts into the current when you lean back—which is a huge advantage if you want to make a lightning-fast pivot, but a disadvantage if you do it unintentionally in heavy rapids. Shift your center of gravity slightly forward and paddle actively. The Paname will reward you with speed and agility that are truly addictive! And if you’re a paddler right at the weight limit for both boats (around 70 kg), I recommend the smaller “S” version, where you’ll be able to take full advantage of its playfulness and the stern’s ability to dive.
