Vydra Maku Canoe Closed: Speed and Dryness in Every Rapid
The Closed Vydra: The Legend's Sportier Sister
The “Closed Vydra” model is based on the exact same, time-tested hull as the classic Maku Vydra, but differs in its upper deck. The manufacturer has fitted the boat with long covers over both ends, creating a cockpit that provides much better protection for the crew and cargo from splashing water. This makes the canoe a much more versatile tool for experienced paddlers who actively seek out more challenging stretches of rivers both at home and abroad and don’t want to waste time bailing out the boat after every major weir.
Shape and Hydrodynamics: Speed and Precise Tilt
The Vydra's handling characteristics are clearly geared toward performance and immediate responsiveness:
- Slim profile (80 cm): A canoe offers the water the absolute minimum of resistance. It’s incredibly fast; long, calm stretches fly by in a flash, and both the stern and bow paddlers conserve as much energy as possible.
- Round bottom for rapid reactions: Unlike wide touring “vans,” the Vydra has a rounder profile. While this provides less initial stability, it responds all the more brilliantly to tilts and changes in direction in strong currents.
- Acute angle at the tip: It cuts through the water cleanly and elegantly; the boat maintains a straight course perfectly without veering unnecessarily to the sides.
Design and Decks: Water Stays Out
The durability and cleverly designed upper fuselage are huge advantages of this model:
- Extended decks: The solid plastic deck at both the bow and stern causes the waves from the rapids to spill over the boat and flow back into the river, rather than ending up at your feet.
- Durable PE material: The shell is made of thick-walled polyethylene. It can withstand rough scraping against summer gravel and heavy impacts against rocks in areas of the river with limited visibility.
- Wooden Seats with a Long History: The boat is equipped with classic wooden seats, which are an integral part of it. They feel pleasant to the touch and, in the cold spring water, insulate you from the cold much better than plastic.
Who is this boat ideal for?
The Closed Otter requires a little more experience, but it will reward you a hundredfold:
- Experienced paddlers and athletes: If you know how to read the water, control the boat by tilting it, and enjoy navigating difficult eddies, you'll love this model.
- Rafting on faster-flowing rivers: An excellent choice for spring streams or Alpine rivers (difficulty WW I-II+), where covered tips offer a huge tactical advantage.
- A brisk hike for two: A great boat for quick trips, with luggage stored safely below deck and in the middle.

Expert advice: If you’re switching to the Vydra from modern flat-bottomed “tubs,” be prepared for the rounder bottom to feel a bit wobbly at first. But that’s not a flaw—it’s your greatest asset! In waves or at the boundary between currents, never force the boat to stay perfectly level at all costs. Instead, consciously lean your body toward the inside edge of the turn. This gives the Vydra fantastic maneuverability, and the passage will be much smoother. Another advantage of the “closed” version is its storage space: soft, waterproof bags filled with dry clothes can be easily squeezed under both the front and rear decks. This saves a lot of space in the middle of the boat and improves both the aerodynamics and the overall center of gravity of the craft on larger rapids.
