Venture Islay 14 Skeg: A classic with a modern, lightweight design for any water conditions
Islay 14: A Versatile Whiskey That Never Gets Boring
The Venture Islay 14 is a classic touring kayak in a compact and maneuverable design. At just over 4 and a quarter meters (14 feet) in length, it offers significantly better speed and glide than short recreational kayaks, yet it’s still much more maneuverable and easier to transport than traditional 5-meter sea kayaks. It was designed for paddlers who want to explore smaller lakes, calm rivers, and coastal waters, but who also need to carry enough gear for a day-long or multi-day trip.
Design and Hydrodynamics: Skeg, Stability, and Bulky Bow
The hull's shape is the result of many years of development focused on versatility:
- First-class stability: The design of the flat midsection of the hull ensures excellent primary (initial) stability. You’ll feel safe on the boat as soon as you step aboard, which is a huge plus for beginners or when handling cargo on the water.
- Skeg: Steering on the open waters of a lake or the sea can be exhausting due to crosswinds. That’s why the Islay 14 is equipped with a retractable rudder. Once you lower it, the boat “locks” into a straight course (tracking), which significantly conserves your energy. When you need to maneuver through winding waters, simply retract the skeg.
- Bulky bow: The bow has a gentle rocker and plenty of volume. It reliably cuts through and rides over larger waves without needlessly letting water splash over the deck onto the rider.
Two versions for the perfect fit: Islay 14 and 14 LV
Since there is no one-size-fits-all kayak, Venture manufactures the Islay 14 in two different volume configurations:
- Islay 14: The standard version with a large displacement (374 liters), designed for medium-sized and larger riders (roughly 55 to 130 kg) or for those who plan to carry very heavy luggage.
- Islay 14 LV (Low Volume): A smaller version. It is slightly narrower and has a lower deck profile (displacement 324 liters). It is ideal for women, juniors, and lighter paddlers (from 40 to 93 kg). In a narrower boat, smaller paddlers won’t “float” and will be able to tilt it onto its edge much more easily, which is key to effective steering.
Outfitting: The Fit 4 System for All-Day Comfort
Venture emphasizes that you should get out of the water with a smile, not a sore back:
- Fit 4 System: The chair features exceptionally comfortable, ergonomic padding. The high backrest can be easily adjusted for both height and angle, providing excellent lumbar support.
- Armrests: Adjustable footrests and comfortable thigh supports ensure perfect contact with the boat, which is essential for efficient power transfer and roll control.
- Storage capacity: There are two large waterproof compartments at the bow and stern. They are separated by sturdy bulkheads and sealed with high-quality KajakSport rubber hatches. They can hold camping gear, food, and dry clothing. The deck also features elastic nets (bungee cords) for additional small items.
Suitable Activities and Uses on the Water
Islay 14 is a great companion for:
- Hiking and multi-day trips: With its excellent load capacity and storage space, it can handle all the gear you need for multi-day trips (Sázava, Vltava, Alpine lakes).
- Coastal Cruises (Coastal Touring): Thanks to its skeg and voluminous bow, it can handle light swells and crosswinds in more open waters.
- Fitness Paddling: The boat's excellent glide makes for quick morning or evening workouts.

Caring for a Polyethylene Shell
The hull is made of high-quality, durable polyethylene. To maximize its service life, we recommend storing the kayak away from constant direct UV exposure (ideally under a roof or a tarp). After a trip, especially in saltwater or on muddy/sandy terrain, rinse the kayak thoroughly with fresh water. Critically important Rinse out the housing and the cables of the retractable skeg to prevent the mechanism from seizing up due to sand and salt. Treat the rubber chamber covers occasionally with a mild silicone spray.

Expert advice: On open water, the skeg is your secret weapon against crosswinds and waves. But remember this unwritten rule: use it only where there is sufficient depth. As soon as you land on the beach or navigate a shallow, rocky river, Always pull the skeg up with the cable! If you hit a rock with the extended fin while going fast, you could bend its control cable. The distinction between the LV and classic 14 sizes is a huge advantage—if you weigh under 80 kg, I strongly recommend considering the LV version. The kayak will “hug” you better, and you’ll have much better control over it when steering by leaning the hull.
