The Wolferine as the benchmark of hiking: the evolution of a legendary shape

The shape of the Wolferine blade from the Czech brand TNP has literally become an icon among hiking and seakayak paddles. Its design is the result of long-term testing on the open sea and Czech rivers. Unlike aggressive wide blades for wild water, the Wolferine is characterized by its elongated, asymmetrical profile (low-angle shape).

This geometry is optimized for a smooth, less forceful but more frequent stroke. Over the course of a full day's paddling, when a paddler takes tens of thousands of strokes, the Wolferine shape minimizes drag when pulling the paddle out of the water, saving shoulder joints. The blade offers the perfect balance between the surface area needed for support and aerodynamics in a headwind. The shape of the tip also makes it easier to "cut" the water without unnecessary splashing.

Sheet construction: carbon fibre doped thermoplastic

The material composition of the sheets is what sets the "C" series above the standard. While conventional plastic paddles are cheap and nearly indestructible, they often suffer from unpleasant flexibility in the water. Full carbon paddles, on the other hand, are stiff but brittle when hitting rocks. TNP has chosen a happy medium here for expedition deployment.

The sheets are made of high quality polyamide (thermoplastic) into which they are injection moulded under high pressurecarbon (carbon) fibres. This process (often referred to as PAG Carbon) produces a material that retains the excellent mechanical resistance of plastic - you can bounce off rocks on shallow Czech rivers without fear. The carbon fibers, however, add radical stiffness to the sheet. The paddle doesn't "chew" during a power stroke, it doesn't flex, and your energy is much more efficiently transferred to the forward motion of the boat.

Four-piece fiberglass shaft: Durability and ideal flexibility

The biggest technological challenge with multi-part paddles is always maintaining the stiffness of the whole system and eliminating unpleasant play (bowing) in the joints. The TNP 716C uses a sturdy, high qualityfiberglass. The fibreglass shaft offers an excellent compromise between weight and price, and has a natural, slightly higher flexibility than pure carbon. This subtle flexibility absorbs micro-impacts during the stroke and significantly saves your hamstrings during multi-kilometre crossings. Another huge advantage is that fiberglass doesn't harden in your hands like duralumin (aluminum) paddles, which you'll appreciate during spring and fall paddling.

Four-part construction means that you break the paddle into segments, the longest of which is usually under 70 centimetres. This is absolutely key for packraft users who need to pack the paddle inside a backpack, or for travelers who don't want to pay excess baggage fees on the plane. The joints are solved with precision turned push-pin couplings and a Vario lock at the center joint.

YP Vario coupling: perfect adaptability for packrafting

At the heart of this paddle's center joint is a top-of-the-lineYP Vario coupling. This mechanism represents a revolution in equipment personalisation. With a simple lever that can be operated even with neoprene gloves, you can adjust the paddle in two essential axes:

  • Length change (+/- 10 cm): This feature is invaluable just for packrafting and hiking. Packrafts are usually very wide boats with a high seat that require a longer paddle (e.g. 220-230 cm) than a narrow sea kayak (where e.g. 210 cm is sufficient). With the YP clutch, you only need one paddle for different types of boats and for different rider heights.
  • Feather angle adjustment: The clutch allows for infinite angle adjustment from 0° to 360° for both right and left-handed users. Is there a strong headwind? Increase the angle of the blades. Does your wrist hurt? Reduce the angle to 30° or switch to the uncrossed setting (0°). Adaptability is absolute.

Hydrodynamics and leaf stability on long routes

The centre guide rib on the back of the Wolferine blade (backface) ensures that the paddle does not move sideways during the stroke. The water flows smoothly around the blade, which prevents the so-called "flutter". In addition, the end of the blade at the shaft is shaped to naturally shed water droplets and prevent them from running directly onto the paddler's hands, although standard drip rings are of course fitted on the blade.

Suitable activities and field deployment

The TNP Wolferine Carbon 716C.4YP excels in disciplines where the need for transport is combined with reliable performance:

Packrafting: Pack the paddle in your backpack, it takes up no space and on the river it provides a firm leaf support combined with a pleasantly flexible blade.
Seakayaking and hiking: The ergonomics and flexibility of the fiberglass shaft minimize fatigue on multi-kilometer trails.
Air expeditions: The paddle easily meets the limits of normal checked baggage.

About TNP: Czech quality with a global reputation

TNP is a traditional Czech manufacturer with a production plant that supplies paddlers all over the world. Their paddles have earned a reputation as "indestructible workhorses". The company is constantly innovating its manufacturing processes and the integration of composite materials into its touring lines shows that Czech engineering is still among the world's best and can offer the perfect price/performance ratio.

Care, maintenance and service of the split shaft

Multi-part paddles are in principle more susceptible to dirt. If you take a paddle out to sea, crystallizing salt can literally "cook" the joints after drying. Fine sand is the same enemy. Rule number one: after each expedition, unfold the paddle into all 4 parts and rinse them thoroughly with fresh, clean water. Do not leave the YP Vario clutch permanently locked in storage. If the parts go in stiffly, never use oils or greasy creams (sand will immediately stick to these), just wash the joints and, if necessary, very lightly coat with dry Teflon.

Bonus program and purchase benefits

With the purchase of this premium travel paddle from us, you will receive a significant amount of credits for our bonus program. These can be used on your next order to purchase a drysuit, life jacket or throw bag, for example. Because we understand the specifics of packrafting and seakayaking, we are happy to advise you on the ideal starting paddle length for your boat type before shipping.

Expert advice: If you are setting up your paddle for a wide packraft, remember that the paddling technique here is different from a traditional kayak. Because of the wide rollers, you have to guide the paddle at a lower angle. I recommend setting the YP clutch to a longer dimension and reducing the blade angle to 30-45 degrees. A fiberglass shaft at these longer dimensions will offer you a nice suspension that you will appreciate at the end of each day. When folding a 4-piece paddle, always make sure to snap all joints (especially those with a spring pin) over and check with a light tug before setting out.
